Sarah Temporal and Damien Becker: Poetic Express – Northern Rivers comes to Melbourne

Sarah Temporal: Three Secrets
Damien Becker: In the Back of the Ambulance

As part of Sonic Poetry Festival, Poetic Express will host a double feature from Sarah Temporal and Damien Becker. They are both prize-winning poets from the Northern Rivers NSW who are married (to each other).

Sarah Temporal is a poet who has played in spoken-word since the early 2000s, who now runs a regional initiative called Poets Out Loud which sees up to 200 attendees per event. She is drawn to stories and poems that have a distinct voice, authenticity and rhythm. She describes her process as an attempt to find a language unique to a particular experience, revealing what is normally kept secret. Her debut poetry collection Tight Bindings is upcoming from Puncher and Wattmann. In this collection of performance and page poetry, Sarah is grapples with embodied experiences of birth, death, sex, illness and desire, as well as the griefs and secrets of family life. Sarah is looking forward to sharing pieces from the collection at Poetic Express, as well as new work from The Birth Suite, a collaboration with circus artist Britt Portelli.

Damien Becker is a writer and performer from Murwillumbah, Australia. An award-winning spoken word artist, including the Bunker Spoken Word Prize, Australian Poetry Slam State Champion and National Finalist, his poetry has been published by Australian Poetry Journal, Verity La, Red Room Poetry, and Bramble Journal, among others. He lives with cystic fibrosis and is a double-lung transplant recipient.

Regional poets exchange
Sarah and Damien are also hosting a workshop prior to the event, a roundtable discussion from 5:30pm-6:30pm upstairs in The Brother Public House. They are interested in discussing possibilities for a Regional Poets Exchange, a project which could ideally support poets to travel from Naarm to regional areas and vice versa. With Damien’s background in community development and Sarah’s experience running Poets Out Loud, they look forward to exploring ideas with Melbourne poets and convenors. Places for the workshop can be pre-booked at https://www.trybooking.com/CJZTX
